Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *stukati. Cognate with Ukrainian сту́кати (stúkaty), Belarusian сту́каць (stúkacʹ), Polish stukać. Of onomatopoeic origin; see стук (stuk), стуча́ть (stučátʹ). Compare Latvian stukât (to walk with small steps (of children learning to walk)), stuknît (to push forward with blows), stucinât (to knock, to rumble), stukme (trampled place in a meadow).
