Etymology[edit]

From Old East Slavic товарищь ‎(tovariščĭ), from Proto-Slavic *tovarišь, from *tovarъ +‎ *-iščь. Early borrowing from Turkic tavar ('property, goods') and -iš ('friend').[1]
