הֶעֱלָה • (he'elá) (hif'il construction) (transitive)

1. to raise, lift
   • Tanach, Genesis 37:28, with translation of the King James Version:

     וַיִּמְשְׁכוּ וַיַּעֲלוּ אֶת יוֹסֵף מִן הַבּוֹר

     vayimsh'chú vaya'alú et yoséf min habór

     and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit

2. to bring from a low place to a high place
   • Tanach, Genesis 46:4, with translation of the King James Version:

     אָנֹכִי אֵרֵד עִמְּךָ מִצְרַיְמָה וְאָנֹכִי אַעַלְךָ גַם עָלֹה

     anochí eréd im'chá mitsráyma v'anochí a'alchá gam aló

     I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again

3. to offer (an animal sacrifice or the like, to God or the like)
   • Tanach, Genesis 8:20, with translation of the King James Version:

     וַיַּעַל עֹלֹת בַּמִּזְבֵּחַ

     vayá'al olót bamizbéach

     and offered burnt offerings on the altar

4. to promote to a higher position
   • a. 217 C.E., Mishnah, Ketubot 2:8:

     אין מעלין לכהונה על פי עד אחד

     ein ma'alín lak'huná al pi ed echád

     There is no promoting to the priesthood based on the testimony of [only] one witness.

5. to resolve, decide
   • c. 1965, אליעזר יהודה וולדינברג (Eliezer Y'huda Valdinberg), ציץ אליעזר (Tsits Eliezer), volume 8, section 15, chapter 13, paragraph 14, page 129, column 2 [1]:

     וזאת‬ ‫הלכה העלה שאסור לחולה שא״ב סכנה ללכת לרופא‬ ‫כזה [מחלל שבת] ביום ש״ק

     v'zót halakhá he'elá she'asúr l'kholé Sh'"B sakaná lalékhet l'rofé kazé [mekhalél shabát] b'yom Sh"K

     And this halacha decides, that it is forbidden for a sick person who is not in danger to go to a doctor like this [who desecrates the Sabbath] on the day of the holy Sabbath.

6. to light (a lamp or the like)

     בְּהַעֲלֹתְךָ אֶת הַנֵּרֹת
