From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (mʾhyk' /⁠māhīg⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *mácyah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátsyas. Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬯𐬌𐬌𐬀 (masiia), Sanskrit मत्स्य (mátsya).
