[edit]Inherited from Prakrit [script needed] (cāulā), and probably of Dravidian or Austroasiatic origin.[1] Compare Urdu چاوَل (cāval), Sindhi چانور (cã̄uru, “grain of rice cleansed from the husk”), Sylheti ꠌꠣꠃꠟ (saul), Bengali চাল (cal), Assamese চাউল (saul), Odia ଚାଉଳ (cāuḷa), Rohingya soil. Related to Persian چلو (čelow), which was borrowed from an Indic language.[2] Doublet of چاوَل (cāval).
