गाड़ी
Appearance
Hindi
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀕𑀟𑁆𑀟 (gaḍḍa), 𑀕𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀻 (gaḍḍī), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀸𑀟𑁆𑀟 (*gāḍḍa), which Das derives from Sanskrit गान्त्री (gāntrī),[1] the feminine variant of गन्तृ (gantṛ), a compound of गम् (gam, "to go, move") + -तृ (-tṛ).
However, Turner disagrees, and draws comparisons to Sanskrit गर्त (garta, “hole”) and/or Latin cathedra (“armchair”).
