From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćámati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čámati, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷém-e-ti, from *kʷem- (“swallow”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬱𐬀𐬨 (ašam, “sip”), Old Armenian քիմք (kʻimkʻ, “palate”), Icelandic hvōma.
