    Mayrhofer considers the root related to फाल (phā́la, plough), with both perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *(s)pelH- (to split, tear off) or *(s)bʰel- (to swell); compare Lithuanian spãlis ((month of) flax boom (i.e. October)).[1][2] See also Etymology 2.
