Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to cut, scratch, tear, sketch an outline). Cognates include Armenian գիր (gir, letter), Ancient Greek ῥινός (rhinós, skin), Old Church Slavonic рана (rana, wound), Old High German rīzan (German reißen) and Old English wrītan (English write).
