Inherited from Prakrit 𑀡𑀘𑁆𑀘𑀇 (ṇaccaï), from Sanskrit नृत्यति (nṛtyati, to dance), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(s)nr̥tyati, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)nr̥-t-yeti, from *(s)ner-t-, an extension of *(s)ner- (to turn, bend, twist). Cognate with English narrow. Doublet of নৃত্য (nritto), নাট্য (naṭṭo) and নাটক (naṭok).
