From Sanskrit धर्म (dharma, law, regulation, rule; precept; justice; morality; etc) + Pali anuñña (consent; permission; sanction). Cognate with Khmer ធម្មនួញ (thɔɔmmɔɔnuəñ), ធម្មនុញ្ញ (thŏəmmĕəʼnuñ); Lao ທຳມະນູນ (tham ma nūn).
