From ลิข (lík, writing; written matter) +‎ สิทธิ์ (sìt, right); perhaps calque of English copyright.

Probably used officially for the first time on 16 June 1931, when the Literary Works and Artistic Works Protection Act 1931 (พระราชบัญญัติคุ้มครองวรรณกรรมและศิลปกรรม พุทธศักราช ๒๔๗๔) was enacted. Formerly known as กรรมสิทธิ์ผู้แต่งหนังสือ.
