Etymology

หมา (mǎa, “dog”) +‎ กัด (gàt, “to bite”) +‎ อย่า (yàa, “do not”) +‎ กัด (gàt, “to bite”) +‎ ตอบ (dtɔ̀ɔp, “back; in response”); literally "[when] a dog bite [you], don't bite it back"; probably from or influenced by the following old stanza:

Pali: Yo svānassa duse pāde		tassa pādaṃ na so dusa
evameva hi dujjano		akrodhā na samantito.	(โย สฺวานสฺส ทุเส ปาเท ตสฺส ปาทํ น โส ทุส เอวะเมวะ หิ ทุชฺชโน อกฺโรธา น สมนฺติโต)

When any dog that is fierce bites your feet,

do not bite the dog back, do not get angry too easily.

When any fool, a man of corrupt character, hurts you or does you wrong,

do not feel offended, do not show him your frowning face – just say nothing to him in return and shun him.
