From Proto-Tai *ʰmaːᴬ (dog). Cognate with Ahom 𑜉𑜡 (), Aiton မႃ (), Tai Dam ꪢꪱ, Tai Nüa ᥛᥣᥴ (máa), Lao ໝາ (), ᦖᦱ (ṁaa), Shan မႃ (mǎa), Zhuang ma, Saek หม่า. Compare Proto-Be *maːᴬ¹, Proto-Hlai *hmaː (dog; hunting dog).
