From Proto-Mon-Khmer *tkɔɔʔ ~ *tkɔɔh (island). Cognate with Mon တကံ (tkɔˀ), Khmer កោះ (kɑh), Chong kɑʔ, Nyah Kur เกาะ, Lao ເກາະ (), Vietnamese and Mal kɔʔ.
