[edit]From Proto-Southwestern Tai *kɛːŋᴬ² (“soup; broth”), from Middle Chinese 羹 (MC kaeng, “thick soup”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ, Khün ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ, Lao ແກງ (kǣng), Lü ᦶᦂᧂ (k̇aeng), Shan ၵႅင် (kěng), Tai Nüa ᥐᥦᥒ (kaeng), Saek เก๋ง, Yong ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ.
