From Middle Chinese (MC t͡ɕɨoX, “master; owner”). Cognate with Thai เจ้า (jâao), ᦈᧁᧉ (ṫsaw2), Tai Dam ꪹꪊ꫁ꪱ, Shan ၸဝ်ႈ (tsāw), Ahom 𑜋𑜈𑜫 (chaw) or 𑜋𑜨𑜧 (chow).
