Etymology 3

[edit]

The "droplet" sense is from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-dz(y)ak (to drip, drop). Cognate with Tibetan ཐིགས (thigs, to drip); Luce also compares Old Chinese (OC *teːɡ, “to drip; drop”).[1]

The "spread, touch in a chain" sense is grouped with the "drop" sense by MED (as a chain of drops spreads). However, STEDT apparently separates it out, assigning the "spread" sense to a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *C-cak (to push) (Written Burmese: cak "transmit impetus; to propagate or be propagated"), whence Lahu [script needed] (tsa⁵, to push).
