From 植(しょく) (shoku, “to plant”) + 字(じ) (ji, “character”), as in "planting" movable type into a frame for printing.

植(しょく)字(じ)する • (shokuji suru) ^{←しよくじ (syokuzi)^?}suru (stem 植(しょく)字(じ)し (shokuji shi), past 植(しょく)字(じ)した (shokuji shita))

This term can be used synonymously with 組(くみ)版(はん) (kumihan), although it is actually its meronym. 植(しょく)字(じ) (shokuji) refers to the specific task of composing type with 約(やく)物(もの) (yakumono, “punctuation”) and 込(こ)め物(もの) (komemono, “spacing”), which is done after 文(ぶん)選(せん) (bunsen, “type picking”). 組(くみ)版(はん) (kumihan) encompasses these two tasks.
Compare 文(も)字(じ)組(く)み (mojikumi, “character composition”), which is about preventing certain classes of characters from violating typographic rules.
