Etymology 1[edit]

First attested in the Hangul letters from the grave of Lady Suncheon Kim (순천김씨묘출토언간), 1565, as Middle Korean 굿 (Yale: kwus).

Usage notes[edit]

Small-scale rituals are usually not called 굿 (gut), and a different term such as 푸닥거리 (pudakgeori) is used. The minimum scale considered appropriate for the word 굿 (gut) differs according to the region of Korea.

Etymology 2[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean  (Yale: kwut). Possibly an ancient borrowing from Old Chinese (OC *kʰluːd, “hole; cave”).
