Etymology

First attested in the Worin cheon'gangjigok (月印千江之曲 / 월인천강지곡), 1449, as Middle Korean ᄠᅦ〮ᅘᅧ다〮 (Yale: ptéyhhyè-tá). Also attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄠᅥ〮ᅘᅧ다〮 (Yale: ptéhhyè-tá), from ᄠᅳ〮 (ptú-, to be separated) +‎ 어〮 () +‎ ᅘᅧ (hhye-, to pull).
