• This demonym sounds awkward and is generally avoided due to violating the regular velar palatalization rule turning к/г/х into ч/ж/ш before certain suffixes; the expected form would be *ньюйо́рчец (compare га́мбуржец (gámburžec) from Га́мбург (Gámburg)). Additionally, there is no feminine form for ньюйоркец; as a result, жи́тель (m.) and жи́тельница (f.) Нью-Йо́рка ("citizen/dweller of New York") are used instead.
