Korean
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄲᅳᆯ〮 (Yale: spúl), from Old Korean.
Beyond Middle Korean, the Old Korean ancestor of this word, tentatively reconstructed as <*sèpúl>, was the first element of the highest rank of nobility in the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla. This title was variably written with Chinese characters as 舒發翰 (MC syo pjot han) or 舒弗邯 (MC syo pjut han), representing the sound of the ancient Korean word (note that Korean final *-l, which does not exist in Chinese, is customarily written with -t̚) or as 角干 (MC kaewk kan) or 角粲 (MC kaewk tshanH), using the Chinese word 角 (MC kaewk, “horn”) to represent the meaning of <*sèpúl>.
However, the same title is also written in forms that imply an initial *i-, such as 伊伐湌 (MC 'jij bjot tshan) or 伊罰干 (MC 'jij bjot kan). This may reflect an alternative word for “horn”, apparently related to as <*sèpúl>, which was lost by Middle Korean.
