From Proto-Tai *qraj (“egg”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩱ᩵ (khai), Lao ໄຂ່ (khai), Tai Dam ꪼꪎ꪿, Lü ᦺᦃᧈ (ẋay¹), Shan ၶႆႇ (khài), Ahom 𑜁𑜩 (khay), Bouyei jais, Zhuang gyaeq. Compare Sui geis (“egg”) and Southern Kam geiv (“egg”).
