Inherited from Old Polish suszyć, from Proto-Slavic *sušiti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sáušīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂sows-éye-ti, éye-causative of *h₂sews- (“to be dry”). Cognate to English sear and Sanskrit शोषयति (śoṣáyati).
