Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wáytti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wáytˢti, from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (“to know; see”). Cognate with Latin videō, Ancient Greek εἴδω (eídō), Old English witan (whence English wit), Old Church Slavonic вѣдѣти (věděti).

वेत्ति • (vétti) third-singular indicative (class 2, type P, root विद्)
- (with accusative, in older language also with genitive) to know, understand, perceive, learn, become or be acquainted with, be conscious of, have a correct notion of (RV. etc.)
- (usually in third-person plural, or with accusative and nominative with इति (iti)) to know, regard, consider as, take for, declare to be, call (Up., Mn., MBh. etc.)
- तं स्थविरं विदुः ― taṃ sthaviraṃ viduḥ ― they consider or call him aged
- राजर्षिरिति मां विदुः ― rājarṣir iti māṃ viduḥ ― they consider me a rājarṣi
- (with genitive or accusative) to mind, notice, observe, remember (RV., ŚBr., MBh.)
- (with accusative or genitive) to experience, feel (RV. etc.)
- (with accusative) to wish to know, inquire about (RV., AV., Br.)
