Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *wayd-, from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (to know). Cognate with Latin vidi (to see), Ancient Greek οἶδα (oîda, to know) originally having a digamma at the beginning an reading as voĩda.
