From New Latin Antarctica, from Ancient Greek ἀνταρκτικός (antarktikós), from ἀντ- (ant-, ant-, against, opposed) + ἀρκτικός (arktikós, Arctic), from Ancient Greek ἄρκτος (árktos, bear).
