Inherited from Proto-Slavic *galъka, from *galъ (“black, black-colored bird”) + *-ъka (compare Russian -ка (-ka)). Cognate with Bulgarian гал (gal, “jackdaw”), dialectal Macedonian гал (gal, “raven”), archaic Serbo-Croatian га̏о (“black, dirty”) (fem. sg. га̏ла, neut. sg. га̏ло), га̑л (“black color”), Slovene gàl (“bird with black feathers”), dialectal Czech gáł (“dirt; large black peas”).
