Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German tamm. Probably via (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German *tamm from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *dammaz, though it is sometimes considered a later backformation from the verb dämmen. The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German dam).
