Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German telle. The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German delle). The form Tell(e) persists dialectally. Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *daljō. Cognate with Dutch (dialectal) del and English dell.
