@Wyang What's wrong here? {{sa-desc}} is empty no matter the args given. It should make a dynamic {{Sinoxenic}}-style list of borrowed descendants... —Aryaman (मुझसे बात करो) 19:47, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed it; an example is above. What's the scope of the template? Only learned borrowings from Sanskrit or ...? Wyang (talk) 22:01, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Wyang: Thanks, that's great! Yes, only learned borrowings, to clear up e.g. Proto-Indo-Iranian entries. I'll make it collapsible soon... —Aryaman (मुझसे बात करो) 22:41, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm very much against this template and do not think it should be used. {{desctree}} and {{see desc}} should be employed instead. --Victar (talk) 06:23, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@SodhakSH What is your opinion regarding {{sa-desc}}? See also Template talk:sa-desc. Kutchkutch (talk) 04:18, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Kutchkutch: To be honest, I think this isn't a very useful/used template. The word "तत्सम" only means 'similar' in Sanskrit (forget New Sanskrit); you see, tat + sama. This new sense 'संस्कृत-तत्सम' is coined in Hindi and made to look Sanskrit-like. Hence, I feel, it's better to use the term "learned borrowing/learned loan" for such words. It's currently used only on 5 (main namespace) pages. Here, I didn't choose {{sa-desc}} (a little before making this edit, I was aware of this template). 🔥शब्दशोधक🔥 06:17, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@SodhakSH: Although it could make the learned borrowings more easily identifiable like Template:CJKV, it's more decorative than functional and hides the list by default. The template doesn't handle alternative forms, indentation, |sclb= or South Dravidian (as indicated at पीडयति (pīḍayati), गोष्ठ (goṣṭha), द्रोण (droṇa), *𑀭𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*rokka)). If you're concerned about the wording, then the text ''Tatsama:'' could be changed to ''Learned borrowings:''. Kutchkutch (talk) 08:10, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Kutchkutch, what's the problem with this, that we need to use this template? Victar also opposes using this. In a case of lots of borrowed descendants, {{rel-top3}} is better IMO. See also: diff 🔥शब्दशोधक🔥 08:40, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@शांतनु: That's fine. There are Sanskrit entries that use {{desc-top}} for the entire descendants sections including inherited terms. Kutchkutch (talk) 08:56, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
