Etymology

From عمر (omar), (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Persian variant of Arabic عُمَر (ʕumar) (a name), a variant of عَامِر (ʕāmir) (flourishing), from عَمَرَ (ʕamara, to live a long life). The name saw popularity in the West following Edward FitzGerald's translation of Persian poet Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat.
