  1. Footballs used by school teams and professional teams prior to the 1950s often were made of a rubber "bladder" covered with a light-color leather; the exterior leather was actual pigskin or assumed to be because of its flexibility and texture. The ball was somewhat greater in length and visibly greater in diameter than the modern full-size / football, and older versions had a smoother exterior with recessed lacing.
