RFD discussion: English prefix[edit]

The following information has failed Wiktionary's deletion process.

It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.

Not a prefix. Smell-o-rama was formed by analogy with diorama (cf. barf-o-rama), smell-o-vision = smell + -o- + (deprecated template usage) -vision (from television), and smell-o-meter is just (deprecated template usage) smell + (deprecated template usage) -o- + -meter. The (deprecated template usage) smell in (deprecated template usage) smell-o- could be substituted with virtually any concrete noun or noun-seeming word. ※ Raifʻhār Doremítzwr   〰 ··  〰  04:08, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. Somewhat productive as a neologism generator (smell-o-phone, smell-o-rama, smell-o-mints, smell-o-travel, smell-o-solution, smell-o-meter). We aren't let our personal taste get the better of our responsibilities, are we? Shouldn't this be moved to smello-? (cf. [sic] smellovision, smellogram, smellograph, smellology, smellophone, smellorama, smellometer). DCDuring TALK 12:56, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Note that google books:"smell-o-phone" gets only one real hit, ditto google books:"smell-o-mints", whereas google books:"smell-o-travel" and google books:"smell-o-solution" both get zero. Sixty-six are yielded for google books:"smell-o-rama", but google books:"barf-o-rama" is hot on its tail with sixty-four, and whilst google books:"smell-o-meter" gets a respectable thirty-three hits, google books:"applause-o-meter" gets seventy-nine. Do you propose that we create *(deprecated template usage) barf-o- and *(deprecated template usage) applause-o-, too? This is nothing about personal taste; *(deprecated template usage) smell-o- just isn't a prefix. These coinages are all just (deprecated template usage) smell + (deprecated template usage) -o- + (deprecated template usage) whatever. ∿’d: Raifʻhār Doremítzwr 05:57, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree the title is wrong. This isn't a prefix. At the very least, move and delete the redirect. Mglovesfun (talk) 20:22, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree this is not a prefix and not entryworthy. Smello-, maybe; this, no.—msh210 17:40, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's (deprecated template usage) -o-. Delete. Equinox 18:07, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, *(deprecated template usage) smello- shouldn't exist either; that would still be just (deprecated template usage) smell + (deprecated template usage) -o-, with or without the hyphen. We have applauseometer; should we therefore have *(deprecated template usage) applauseo-?  — Raifʻhār Doremítzwr ~  · ⓣ  ·  ~ 22:07, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
