[edit]From Middle High German umbeganc, from Old High German umbigang (“a course, return”), from Proto-Germanic *umbigangaz (“a going around, circuit”), equivalent to um- + Gang (“a gang, going”). Cognate with Dutch omgang, English umgang, Danish omgang, Swedish omgång, Norwegian omgang.
