From Medieval Latin, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Arabic وَاقِع (wāqiʕ, falling), from the expression النَّسْر الوَاقِع (an-nasr al-wāqiʕ, falling eagle). The active participle وَاقِع (wāqiʕ) derives from the verb وَقَعَ (waqaʕa, fall, drop, tumble, alight, pounce).
