Shortened from the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin expression argumentum ad verecundiam. From argumentum (meaning "argument") + ad (meaning "to" or "at") + verecundiam, the accusative singular of verecundia (meaning "coyness", "modesty" or "shame").
