Asturian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Vulgar Latin *eccu hic, from Latin eccum + hic.

Adverb[edit]

aquí

  1. (location) here (in, on, or at this place)
  2. (location) here (to this place)

Catalan[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Vulgar Latin *eccu hic, from Latin eccum + hīc ("this here"), from hic, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰi-ḱe (this, here).

Pronunciation[edit]

Adverb[edit]

aquí

  1. here
    Synonym: ací (Valencia)
    Coordinate terms: allí, allà
  2. (Valencia, classic system) there

Derived terms[edit]

Usage notes[edit]

In the classic three-grade system, aquí is second grade and thus means “there”; in systems that make no distinction between the first and second grades, aquí supplants ací, thus taking on the additional meaning of “here”.

In Valencian systems, ahí rather than aquí is used for the second grade while aquí is used for the first grade alongside ací in various northern and southern dialects.
