Etymology

From the same stem as the verb aust (“to dawn”): from (deprecated template usage) [etyl]  *aus- with an extra -(t)rā (cf. austra “dawn light”) +‎ -ums, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *āws-, *aws- (“to shine”) (< *h₂ews-). As in many other Indo-European languages, the term for “east” is thus related to, or derived from, terms meaning “dawn” or “sunrise.”
