Etymology

From the same stem as the verb aust (to dawn): from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 159: Parameter 1 should be a valid language code; the value bat-pro is not valid. See WT:LOL. *aus- with an extra -(t)rā (cf. austra “dawn light”) +‎ -ums, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *āws-, *aws- (to shine) (< *h₂ews-). As in many other Indo-European languages, the term for “east” is thus related to, or derived from, terms meaning “dawn” or “sunrise.”[1]
