[edit]Sino-Vietnamese word from 不忍, composed of 不 (“not”) and 忍 (“to restrain oneself”).
Its original meaning is "intolerable, insufferable", whence arise "[intolerably] ruthless, heartless, cruel" and "compassionate, sympathetic [towards intolerably destitute people]"
