Unknown and disputed. Possibly of an eastern, but pre-Turkish origin (e.g. Cuman, other Turkic, or perhaps Iranian). Has cognates in each of the languages surrounding Romania. Alsofound in Aromanian as baci. May alternatively be a native, pre-Roman substratum word.[1]
