From Middle Dutch besmetten, from Old Dutch *besmetten, *besmitten, from Proto-West Germanic *bismittjan (to smear, anoint, stain). Equivalent to be- +‎ smetten. Cognate with German beschmitzen (to smear, slander), Saterland Frisian bismitte (to stain), Old English besmittian (to pollute, defile).
