[edit]From Middle Dutch besmetten, from Old Dutch *besmetten, *besmitten, from Proto-West Germanic *bismittjan (“to smear, anoint, stain”). Equivalent to be- + smetten. Cognate with German beschmitzen (“to smear, slander”), Saterland Frisian bismitte (“to stain”), Old English besmittian (“to pollute, defile”).
