- inherited from Ottoman Turkish بوزه, from Persian بوزه (buze).
- Possibly from bozmak ("to blemish, to blight, to spoil or ruin") and Ottoman Turkish بوز (boz) ("Gray, Brown" - referring to the color of the beverage).
