From Proto-Vietic *ciɲ (leg, foot). Might be related to Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟuŋ ~ *ɟuəŋ ~ *ɟəŋ (leg, foot) (whence Khmer ជើង (cəəng), Bahnar jơ̆ng, Mon ဇိုၚ်) through some phonological progress.
