From Proto-Vietic *ʔa-cɔːʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *cɔʔ (dog); cognate with Semai co (dog, servant, slave), Halang chô (dog), Pacoh acho (dog), Khmu /sɔʔ/ and Mang /θɔː¹/. Compare also Khmer (cɑɑ, Year of the Dog).
