From des- +‎ jejuar,[1][2] or less likely from a Vulgar Latin *disieiūnāre, from Late Latin ieiūnāre, from Latin ieiūnus. Compare English dine, Catalan dejunar, Spanish desayunar, French déjeuner, Italian digiunare, Occitan dejunar.
