German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German enzwei, entzwī, inzwī, untzwī, equivalent to ent- +‎ zwei. Cognate with Middle Low German entwei, intwei, untwey.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)

Adjective[edit]

entzwei (strong nominative masculine singular entzweier, not comparable)

  1. halved, divided (in two)
  2. broken
    Synonyms: kaputt, defekt

Usage notes[edit]

Attributive use of this word and hence inflection is subliterary and proscribed—as likely as zu, aus, durch, an being declined. The predicative is not, but is unexpected in the absence of artistic aspirations, in comparison to the inevitable uses as a separable prefix, entzwei-.

Declension[edit]
