Turkish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish ایرمك (ermek, to attain, reach, mature), from Proto-Turkic *ẹ̄r- (to reach).[1] According to Nişanyan it is akin to Old Turkic [script needed] (er-, to be),[2] see more at imek.

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (er-, to reach), Khalaj [script needed] (ẹ̄̂r-, to reach) and possibly Hungarian ér (to reach), thought to be a Turkic borrowing. Also related to Old Uyghur [script needed] (ert-, to pass).
