Etymology

From Middle High German gewon(e)lich, from Old High German giwonalīh (11th c. as adverb giwonalīhho), from Proto-West Germanic *gawunalīk. Cognate with Dutch gewoonlijk, Old English ġewuneliċ. Equivalent to gewohn +‎ -lich, the former being an obsolete variant of gewohnt. The umlaut in Modern German developed under influence of related gewöhnen (Middle High German gewenen).
